Couples Lost at Sea

Where did the love go?

When couples first meet, so much seems wonderful. It feels so easy to talk, to connect, to laugh, to love. But we miss things in those first months or even years. Things slipped past us because love has a way of messing with the eyes.

First, it might be this nagging feeling that something is missing, that something is wrong, that something is not like it once was.

Maybe it’s a tension felt in the relationship. Maybe conversations just aren’t happening as smoothly, or maybe not at all.

Things start to feel routine or even distant at times. For others, it seems a full-out anger comes to color the entire relationship. Arguments happen so easily.

And for some, it’s just one thing it seems, that keeps getting in the way.

What happened to how things were?

How did we get here? Cracks appear in the very foundation on which we hoped to build our life: a loving, supportive relationship.

We put so much of ourselves into it; we desperately want this relationship to work. But it’s so exhausting. This can be anxiety-inducing, disorienting, and can even leave us feeling hopeless.

Is there a way to make a better life from here? Can we find our way out of this storm as a couple?

What do we do to save our relationship?

I don’t have to tell you what’s at stake. It’s not like with other forms of therapy. When someone realizes their primary relationship is in danger, they know what’s at stake. They know how important it is that they do something – that they get help.

I get it. I know what it’s like.

And the hope I have to offer is that I have seen many couples find a way through the storm. I wouldn’t offer my help if I haven’t seen it work more times than I can count.

I’ve watched couples right in front of me as they began to realize what’s going on. I’ve watched the tears stream down faces as a sense of connection and understanding blossomed between them for the first time in years.

I’ve had the joy of listening as fights finally for the first time went a different direction than they’ve always gone. I’ve laughed out loud with them as they’ve told me about how great sex was for the first time in months.

I’ve seen the hard work of understanding and partnership pay off to see people get back what most of us want more than anything in the world: that companion we talk to about everything, and we can get through anything with.

The care and courage for each other is there. It’s inside. It’s what brought you together.

But sometimes you need an experienced, understanding person to help find your way forward. With my knowledge and experience and your willingness, we will get there.

But most of all: you both will get there.
